Lost Recipes, Schell Games’ VR cooking game featuring recipes from Greek, Chinese, and Mayan cultures, is available now exclusively on the Meta Quest Platform at the retail price of $14.99 USD.
Originally announced during the UploadVR Showcase in December 2021, Lost Recipes places players in the heart of historically-accurate kitchens to cook for ghosts from ancient Greece, Song Dynasty, China, and the Yucatan Peninsula, Maya. These ghosts long to pass on the traditional recipes of their favorite dishes, and players will use authentic ingredients, utensils, and techniques to recreate tasty dishes.
“With Lost Recipes, our goal was to create a relaxing VR game that would appeal to VR enthusiasts or friends and family who are relatively new to VR experiences,” said CEO Jesse Schell. “We’re really proud of the way the core ingredients of the game came together to create a historically-accurate peek into the way cooking was handled across cultures and time.”
In-game chefs will learn the food traditions of past cultures. They will also grow their understanding of how geography and history impacted the culinary tastes of past civilizations. The Lost Recipes website features a downloadable pdf featuring all of the recipes experienced within the game, so home chefs can try their hand in real life at serving up traditional dishes throughout history.
“Throughout the game, players will hear educational tidbits from the ancient ghosts who are guiding them through the recipes included in the game,” said Lost Recipes Project Director Melanie Harke. “Our hope is that as players learn about these cultures and cuisines and work with the (virtual) tools used in the past to create dishes. We had a lot of fun researching time periods, locations, and cultures to create this game, and we believe players will enjoy discovering how some of the kitchen tools and techniques we use today were first used many, many years ago.”
The game’s arrival continues the wave of popularity that VR cooking simulators have enjoyed. For example, Cooking Simulator VR was named VR Game of the Year at the recent Steam Awards.
