2020 Schell Games Year in Review

insights

We’re now into the final days of 2020, and while many are excited to move past this challenging year, we’d like to celebrate some positive moments Schell Games experienced internally.

New hires
New Team Members

We’re proud to say that we hired 22 new team members this year. Despite the economic impact of COVID-19, we were able to hire new employees and prevent layoffs for our current team members. Since the company’s inception in 2002, we have never suffered a single layoff. If you’re interested in working at Schell Games, we’re still hiring!

I Expect You To Die Earns $2 Million Revenue On Oculus Quest

Our virtual reality espionage title I Expect You To Die reached a big financial milestone in 2020. By May 21, the one-year anniversary of the Oculus Quest’s release, I Expect You To Die had already sold 100,000 copies. Congratulations to our team members who worked so hard on producing, developing, and designing the game.

Inclusion
Inclusion Advisory Committee

Schell Games is both committed to being an equitable and inclusive studio, and committed to using our strengths to help our community overcome systemic racism, sexism, and all forms of disenfranchisement. To better support these commitments, we launched an Inclusion Advisory Committee. The committee is a collection of individuals who bring unique knowledge and skills which augment the knowledge and skills of the formal leadership in order to more effectively guide the organization. Our committee meets periodically to discuss ways we can make Schell Games promote inclusivity, like donating to nonprofit organizations that support minority groups and including employee pronouns on our website.

Accessibility champions
Accessibility Champions

The Schell Games Accessibility Champions are a grassroots group of team members who are passionate about game accessibility and inclusive development practices. They hold a monthly meeting open to all employees to discuss our accessibility efforts and brainstorm ideas for addressing new accessibility challenges we come across. Although the group started in November 2019, it became much more popular in 2020 with features in the media, on our Dinner w/ the Devs live show, and in a blog post sharing some of their Accessibility Checklist.

Demo Area Remodeled

If you've toured our office then you'll be familiar with our demo area on the third floor. We've recently remodeled the area with new chairs, televisions, and decorations. This updated space will be great for testing new builds and showcasing games during open houses.
